something about choosing pearl necklaces

How to choose pearl necklaces. How to find out the true worth of pearl necklaces? Look for pearls that are mostly round, with high to medium luster, good uniformity, and minimal surface spotting.

A pearl’s quality can be A, AA, AA+, AAA, AAA+. The last two, AAA and AAA+ pearls, have the best quality and they are most valuable. For pearls of the same size, an ‘A’ quality pearl necklace costs only a small fraction of AAA quality pearl necklace.

The quality and value of pearls are based upon six criteria: luster, nacre, surface, color, shape, size and matching. The educated buyer uses his or her preferences to decide which criteria are most important.

Pearl necklaces can be classified either as uniform or graduated. In a uniform strand of pearls, all the pearls used in the necklace are generally of a standard size without any variations among them regarding their size. A pearl necklace which is composed of freshwater pearls will always measure to a length of full millimeter, provided all the pearls used in the string necklace are of uniform size.

However, a graduated strand of necklace often comprises of varying sizes of pearls which are stringed together in order to form a symmetrical shape, starting from the small-sized pearls at the ends to the biggest pearl kept in the middle which serves as the pendant. These graduated strands of pearl necklaces are recorded to have a difference of at least 3mm between their central pearl and the pearls which are stringed together at the extreme ends.

Pearl necklaces are also judged depending upon the quality of fresh water pearls which are used in it. The grade and the color of the pearl are yet, some other factors which help to determine the price of a necklace. Necklaces which are formed using white and black pearls continue to enjoy immense popularity among the masses till date; however it is also possible to find pearls which have hint of different colors in them.
